![]() ![]() The problem, reactionary or otherwise, with Forspoken's presentation is in the snark. The short version, and why in contrast Hi-Fi Rush works despite the comparison, is in the prose, intend, and delivery. I don't want to say "skill issue" or anything so reductive, but it's clear that a lot of reviewers didn't actually push the systems, either because the game didn't make them or because they didn't feel inclined to or otherwise weren't able to.Post-Cringe: Forspoken and the Self-Sabotage of the Smirking Protagonist Shared in the OT, figured maybe people could have something to talk about something that's not dialogue lol. This video is a pretty good showcase of some of the late game possibilities. Which like, yeah if the game doesn't grab you and you have a deadline it's probably not gonna be top of your list to go and lab it up against a swarms of enemies, but there is a kinda frankly wild ceiling to the combat that I suspect went broadly un or underappreciated given the other issues it seems to have. I don't want to say "skill issue" or anything so reductive, but it's clear that a lot of reviewers didn't actually push the systems, either because the game didn't make them or because they didn't feel inclined to or otherwise weren't able to. This isn't even factoring in parkour ability usage in combat. The game gives you a lot of freedom and implicitly trusts you to make your own fun in this regard, which certainly isn't for everyone. Different types of magic will have different ranges, hitboxes, secondary effects, different effects based on charge level, how they play off one another etc in interesting and creative ways. That said, this game feels more Devil May Cry, where the gameplay and spectacle are the primary focus, not so much its "deep story telling"Äunno about the rest of the game as I've not followed it as extensively but this is from what I've seen not generally true. It's like the perfect way to destroy immersion. I don't need to be attatched to a protagonist who shares my outsiders perspective. I play a videogame as a person going into this world to escape my own. I think it's bland, and creates a detached viewport for us to experience the lore and world of a story. The weakest aspect in my opinion is the isekai storyline. but I still have to question why others get away with that. Seems like a decent game that a lot of people hated because they don't like the idea of a snarky character. There are even some people playing the demo like a character action game on youtube, and that alone sold me on the idea that the combat could be stylish and fun. ![]() Of course the game itself sounds decent, not amazing and addictive in some grand way, but the exploration and combat sounds pretty fun when everything comes together. I don't know, there is a lot of questionable discourse around her as a character where double standards lay at the feet of the conversation but go seemingly ignored. He became an "earnest" character so to speak. Like so many people HATED Devil May Cry 2 because they removed ALL of Dante's snark. Of course it's not going to be everybodies cup of tea, but if you compare Frey to any of the vastly popular similarly styled characters I guarantee you there are people who hate her, while loving those characters. It's for that reason that I can't compare it to the MCU where the characters who EXIST and LIVE in this world are constantly lampshading their situation despite this being relatively normal for them. The entire reason this character is lampshading the things around her is because she's the equivalent to Ash from Army of Darkness. What about people enjoying the banter between the Nier characters? Why do people love Dante? The exact reasons they seem to hate Frey. The writing style irritates people because her delivery is lame, and her "bad-assery" levels aren't easily apparent. They're trying to write a Dante-esque character who is isekai'd into this situation. However, the writing fits with the theme the game is going for. It's not the most boring thing on the planet but it is very "been there, done that" I'm not going to pretend that the writing doesn't get on my nerves most of the time, and the gameplay - at least in the demo - is very mild to boring. ![]()
